In-Person Worship Suspended

June 26, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Dear members and attenders, Like you, I and the Session have been monitoring very closely the surge in COVID-19 cases in San Antonio. Though unwanted, this spike is upon our city and led the Session to meet earlier this afternoon. After discussion, the Session concluded to suspend in-person worship immediately until further notice and return to live-streaming the worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Facebook, YouTube and the Redeemer website. Therefore, this plan now supersedes previous decisions regarding congregational groupings for worship ...

Changes to Worship Groupings

June 09, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Good morning, friends and family! Last night the Session had opportunity to evaluate Redeemer’s return to public, in-person worship. All in all, the Session is very encouraged by the process in place and appreciates the congregation’s cooperation and participation. Everyone agreed that Redeemer’s Deacons and those volunteering as usher/greeters have been particularly helpful. Please know that your contributions are significant. Thank you! As you may have noticed on the livestream, however, the worship services have not come close to ...

Thoughts on Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd and the Church's Response

June 03, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Last night Tara and I had the privilege of watching our third child, Lucy, walk across the stage and receive her high school diploma. It was a wonderful celebration, filled with thankfulness to God for her accomplishments and anticipation about all she will do in the future. Her big smile and those of her classmates tell the story that we most want for our children—a story of a safe, fair and caring community that nurtures young people to become responsible and contributing citizens. The recent, tragic deaths of Ahmaud Arbery (2/23) in ...

May 20, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Good afternoon, friends and family! As promised a few weeks ago, Redeemer is cautiously and excitedly moving towards a return to gathered worship in Word and Sacrament on Pentecost Sunday, May 31st. I cannot express to you how enthusiastic I am about this. I hope you are too! This letter will be the first of three communications from the church, which we hope orient you to how this plan will work. As you read, please keep in mind that this plan has placed a high value on the safety and care of those who choose to attend. Therefore, ...

Session unveils plan to resume public worship.

May 07, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Good afternoon, friends and family! Ever since Texas Governor Abbott chose to begin a phased reopening of Texas, Redeemer’s staff, pastors and Session have been carefully considering the emerging situation and its impact on Redeemer. Last night the Session was able to meet and formulated a plan to allow Redeemer to gather again for public worship at our downtown facility starting on Pentecost Sunday, May 31st. This plan is cautious and is in full compliance with our governor’s recommendations, which were provided to churches on April 27, ...

Pray for 2020 Officer Elections.

May 04, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Last week, the Session had the privilege of sitting down with those who have most recently completed officer training at Redeemer and is pleased to announce their candidacy for office. A congregational meeting has been called for Sunday, June 7th, to elect elders and deacons to serve in the 2023 class of officers. Due to social-distancing measures currently in place, the meeting shall commence immediately following the first service and remain open throughout the morning to allow for all communicant members desiring a vote to have ...

Thoughts on communion observance - A letter from our Senior Pastor

April 15, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Good afternoon, friends and family! One of the important questions facing the Church (the church universal and local) today is whether we should or should not continue to observe Communion, The Lord’s Supper or The Eucharist, as it is variously called. Given that this sacrament is observed weekly at Redeemer, and was also an essential element of regular worship in the early church, forgoing its observance is a significant decision and requires some explanation. At its most recent meeting, the Session was able to take this matter up and ...

United Day of Prayer and Fasting

April 07, 2020
Day of Prayer and Fasting, Good Friday, April 10 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11.28) The whole world is in the throes of a coronavirus pandemic that is spreading death, illness, economic turmoil, unemployment, isolation, panic, and fear. In such desperate times, the people of God should humble themselves and pray to almighty God for his grace, mercy, and love to heal us, restore us, and relieve us from this crushing burden of disease. In response to the ravages of this historic ...

A Short, Practical Guide for Prayer and Fasting

April 07, 2020
Richard Pratt
These are tumultuous times that call for prayer and fasting. Deadly disease runs rampant; the world’s economies are unstable; peace and safety are threatened at every turn. Now, “we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). No matter what trials we face, all of Christ’s followers “are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (Romans 8:37). Still, many of us struggle during these times as never before with hopelessness, loneliness, financial ruin, ...

April 2 Letter from our Senior Pastor

April 02, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Good afternoon, friends and family! Like me, I'm sure that you're finding it hard to believe that we are now into the third week of "sheltering in place" in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. It can seem like things have completely shut down. But, of course, they have not. Routines and responsibilities continue, although differently. That's especially true for Redeemer Presbyterian Church. Though we are not able to join together for worship, bible study, prayer, fellowship and mission in our traditional ways, we are learning ...

Caring for Neighbors During a Crisis

March 25, 2020
Rev. Victor Martinez
Last Sunday Pastor Tom called us to respond to the COVID-19 crisis with faith, for our own peace of mind and so we can boldly love our neighbors. This communication is meant to help you pray and think about how to engage the needs around you. We know that love requires caution with our health and the health of others, but also calls us to proactively care for one another and people in our neighborhoods and workplaces. As Christians, we should react distinctively different than others, who are led by panic and overwhelmed by crisis. Jesus ...

A Prayer for the Church in the Early Days of the COVID-19 Pandemic

March 24, 2020
Walter Henegar
A Prayer for the Church in the Early Days of the COVID-19 Pandemic Almighty God, Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend, You who sit enthroned over the flood— We are staggering in the surf of breakers bringing bad news, and worse news, while an invisible menace laps at our doorstep. Father of all mercies, have mercy on us. We are anxious, exhausted, angry, and sad. We need your peace that surpasses understanding to guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Be our refuge and strength; be our very present help in this time ...

March 18 Letter from our Senior Pastor regarding coronavirus.

March 18, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
March 18, 2020 Dear members and attenders, "Welcome to the new normal!" I think that's what we are all coming to terms with. Who would have thought six months ago that we'd be negotiating a world-wide pandemic surrounding COVID-19 virus, and that terms like social-distancing and self-quarantine would actually be understandable? But this is the "new normal," and the latest estimates suggest that these changes to our lifestyle are going to be with us for a while. Thankfully, as I reminded us on Sunday, COVID-19 has not taken our God by ...

March 13 Letter from our Senior Pastor regarding coronavirus.

March 13, 2020
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
March 13, 2020 Dear members and attenders, As many of you now know, San Antonio verified its first travel-related coronavirus case today. City officials confirm that this person has no relation to any of the evacuees at JBSA-Lackland who were infected with the virus and is under a self-quarantine. This case does not yet represent community spread of the virus, but it is impossible to determine who else might be currently infected with COVID-19 in San Antonio. This development also prompted Mayor Ron Nirenberg to declare a public health ...
