Want wisdom? How can you get wisdom? James 1:5 tells us how in one simple step: Ask God.

The book of James gives practical sign posts to mark the path of wisdom in the Christian life. This spring our women will encourage one another on this “wisdom path”  by studying the book of James using Courtney Doctor’s study, Steadfast, published by The Gospel Coalition. edited study cover copy

Am I a Christian? Would someone observing my life from the outside think that? Or does my life simply mirror the world around me?

In five succinct chapters, James holds up a biblical mirror to help us examine our lives. Practical metaphors and short, to-the-point memory verses will stick with you through your week.

If you tell someone, “Go and be warm and well-fed,” will food, a blanket or a coat be magically conjured by empty words? Just so, if you tell someone you believe in God and all you do is mouth the words, will faith and wisdom be made real by words alone? We all know empty platitudes will not feed or warm anyone, and so it is with our faith. But wait, when James tells us faith without works is dead, is he negating grace as a free gift from God?

Absolutely not! James begins his letter pointing us to the God who gives generously and without reproach, and in James 4:6 he tells us God gives grace to the humble. All of James’ teaching is fueled by grace.

This letter meets us in poverty and wealth, suffering and trials, injustices and illness, conflict without and temptation within. He shows us how to think about poverty and wealth. He addresses our tongues and our hearts. In the face of a world calling us to follow its ways, James calls us to a steadfast faith rooted in the lavish love and generous provision of our heavenly Father.
