Ephesians Women's Bible Study: We Want World Peace!

July 09, 2018
Tara Gibbs
In the movie Miss Congeniality, Sandra Bullock is an FBI agent pretending to be a beauty pageant contestant. When asked on stage “What is the one most important thing our society needs?” she answers, “That would be harsher punishment for parole violators, Stan.” The boisterous audience goes silent. It’s a funny point in the movie because everyone knows the “correct” beauty pageant answer to that question is “world peace”—even Sandra Bullock’s rough and tough character, who hastily adds, “And world peace!” Everyone wants world peace, ri ...

Shepherding Groups Coming this Fall!

July 05, 2018
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Among the many things that make Redeemer special are its commitments to joyful worship, God's freeing grace and serving our city in word and deed. These commitments are foundational to Redeemer's growth and the life-change so many of us have experienced over the years. As a growing church, however, Redeemer's size can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. The bigger Redeemer becomes, the harder it is for our members, particularly our newest ones, to feel at home and experience genuine care in the Gospel. For this reason, the Session has decided ...

Redeemer Transitions Westover Hills Site

July 02, 2018
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Dear friends, I am writing to inform you about an important transition for Redeemer's Westover Hills ministry site. As many of you know, Redeemer launched the Westover Hills site in 2012 under the leadership of ruling elder Manny Alaniz. At that time Manny was a candidate for ministry in South Texas Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). In September of 2015, after much prayer, study and hard work, Manny was ordained and installed as an Assistant Pastor at Redeemer with specific responsibility for the Westover Hills ...

A Summer Reading Recommendation for Parents

June 12, 2018
Sarah Beaugh
Parents, if you’re feeling like you are limping out of the school year and stumbling into summer, you are not alone! Oftentimes we have big goals and dreams, not only for ourselves, but also for our children. With the summer approaching we can feel depleted and defeated from falling short of a standard we set for ourselves or our families.  If you’re looking for some encouragement or wanting to hit the reset button, I would like to recommend Parenting: 14 Gospel Principles That Can Radically Change Your Family by Paul David Tripp as a ...

Children's Ministry Construction Project Underway

June 07, 2018
Haley Wachdorf
When Christian Education classes resume in the fall, children will return to a fresh new look downstairs. Redeemer’s construction project to expand the Children’s Ministry area will take place this summer. Funded by the Building for the Future campaign, the project will more than double the amount of space available for children’s ministry in Redeemer’s facilities, bringing the total to 7,000 square feet. The centerpiece of the project is a 2,000 square foot large group assembly area with a raised stage at the front, space for seating or ...

Coming in July: The Redeemer Block Party

June 04, 2018
Haley Wachdorf
In July, Redeemer will debut a new event: The Redeemer Block Party is a night of fun and fellowship on the Redeemer campus, and a great opportunity to invite friends to experience the Redeemer community. We are excited to begin hosting this summer event on our block. The first Redeemer Block Party will take place on Sunday, July 22nd. The block party will replace one of our longest-running events, Redeemer in the Country. Redeemer did not have a permanent location for the first 12 years of its existence, so all church events took place on ...

Seeking Racial Reconciliation

May 31, 2018
Haley Wachdorf
This summer, Redeemer is inviting the congregation into a conversation about the implications of the Gospel for racial divisions in our churches, city and country, and what it looks like to be a church that lives out Biblical reconciliation. The Presbyterian Church in America has wrestled with this question for years, but in a more intentional way since 2016, when the 43rd General Assembly approved a resolution repenting of the denomination’s sin during the civil rights era. The resolution lamented that some founding fathers of the PCA ...

New Duties Announced for Assistant Pastor Matt Beham

May 31, 2018
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
I am pleased to announce that Youth Pastor Matt Beham will assume pastoral oversight for Redeemer’s nursery and children’s ministries beginning June 4th. These are additional responsibilities for Matt, and which were previously under the pastoral direction of departing pastor, Benjie Slaton. Bringing together Redeemer’s youth and children’s ministries in this way serves our entire program of discipleship for children under the age of 18. Additionally, this will provide Redeemer’s incoming Assistant Pastor of Congregational Life, Brad ...

RPC Youth Staff Update

May 10, 2018
Rev. Matt Beham
I am excited to announce to Redeemer Youthies, parents and the congregation that Redeemer has hired a new full-time member of the Youth Staff, and has also hired a new Youth Intern. Julianne Atkinson will be a full time member of the Redeemer Youth staff. Julianne has been a volunteer with the Redeemer senior high youth group for a year. I am so thankful for the relationships she has built with the young women of our congregation in that time, and I am thrilled that in this role she can further develop her discipleship and counseling of ...

Serving the Border Through Medical Mission Trips

April 24, 2018
Haley Wachdorf
Dr. Bernard Hildebrand, a rheumatologist and elder at Redeemer, says before he started going on medical mission trips, he was doubtful that they could have much of an impact. After all, a three-day clinic can't provide long term care for chronic conditions or perform complex procedures. An opportunity to attend Mission to the World’s Advanced Medical Leadership Training a few years ago changed his mind, he says. Now Hildebrand is serving as the team leader for regular trips Redeemer takes to conduct free medical clinics on the border in ...

New Sermon Series: The Gospel According to Joshua

April 04, 2018
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
This Sunday I will begin a ten week sermon series on the Old Testament book of Joshua, which I’ve titled The Gospel According to Joshua. For most, our familiarity with the book of Joshua is limited to one famous battle involving the ancient Canaanite city of Jericho. The song we learned as children notwithstanding, Joshua did not “fight” this battle. In fact, this is an important lesson Joshua impresses upon the people. "Shout, for the LORD has given you the city (Josh. 6:16). Throughout Joshua, our stereotype of a vast, dominant military ...

Nettletons Find a Perfect Fit at Trinity RUF

March 08, 2018
Haley Wachdorf
As Wil and Mary Nettleton approach the end of their first year leading Reformed University Fellowship at Trinity University, they are settling into life and ministry in San Antonio. Michael and Rachel Novak’s departure from RUF to lead the Trinity Grace Church plant in 2017 after seven years  brought a season of change to RUF at Trinity, but the Nettletons say the ministry they have stepped into at Trinity feels like a perfect fit for them. Mary is the child of a PCA pastor in Marion, North Carolina. Wil was raised in a Christian home in ...

Talking to Children About Lent

February 22, 2018
Sarah Beaugh
Lent can offer parents a rich opportunity to bring the Gospel home to our children’s hearts. My kids love and look forward to Christian holidays, but this year I realized that although they are familiar with the rhythms of the church calendar, sometimes I am taking for granted that they fully grasp the deeper meanings of the seasons. This year, we were able to further discuss the symbols and story of Lent. Sometimes the best way to start is to talk about the joy and glory of Easter. Starting with Easter, you can discuss Jesus’ death and ...

Mentors Needed

February 20, 2018
Haley Wachdorf
In 2017, Redeemer embarked on a new ministry partnership with San Antonio non-profit Communities in Schools to connect male mentors from our congregation with young men in San Antonio’s public high schools who are at risk of dropping out before completing their high school degree. Seven men from Redeemer have been part of the program this school year, primarily mentoring students at Lanier High School, less than two miles from Redeemer. Chris Allen, whose family has attended Redeemer since 2015, says it has been a gradual road to build ...

2017 Ministry Report

February 10, 2018
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
View the full ministry report here. Dear Redeemer Members and Friends, This year, we celebrate Redeemer’s 15th anniversary of ministry. It is remarkable to look back and reflect on all the ways God has shown His faithfulness to us. From our small beginning as a home-based Bible Study of ten families in 2002, we have grown into a congregation of more than 800 members with a permanent home in the heart of Downtown San Antonio. As you will see in the pages of this document, 2017 was an especially rich expression of God’s faithfulness to ...

Ash Wednesday 2018

February 08, 2018
Almighty God, you have created us out of the dust of the earth. May these ashes be a sign of our mortality and penitence, and a reminder that only by your gracious gift are we given everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. - Ash Wednesday prayer Redeemer will hold an Ash Wednesday service to mark the start of Lent at noon on Wednesday, February 14th. The Redeemer nursery will be open for children ages 3 months to 4 years old. We encourage you to come and join us for this beautiful service in the life of the church. Ash ...

Spiritual Formation: What do emotions have to do with it?

January 16, 2018
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
On Sunday, January 21st, Redeemer's Adult CE classes will reconvene for the Spring semester. At this time every year, Redeemer offers a class called Spiritual Formation II - Grace-Based Spiritual Formation. I want to encourage you to attend if you have not taken this class before, or to take it again to refresh these concepts in your mind.  Grace-Based Spiritual Formation weaves together three topics we talk about frequently at Redeemer: Grace, spiritual disciplines, and the connection between our emotional and spiritual lives. In church, ...

Epiphany: A Great Revealing

January 01, 2018
Sarah Beaugh
As a child, I had a great fondness for Epiphany, or, as we called it in my house, Three Kings Day. I grew up hearing how my grandmother did not receive presents on the 25th of December, but rather she and her siblings had to wait until January 6th to receive gifts tucked into their shoes, which were placed at the foot of their beds. It was also considered borderline heresy to take your tree down before that day, and so in my home, our tree stays up until Epiphany. As a parent, I have sought meaningful ways to discuss this day and season with ...
