Today is Ash Wednesday (the beginning of the Lent season)! If you would like to know more about Lent or have a daily, family devotional to go through, click here!

What is Lent, anyway?

March 05, 2014
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
According to the Christian calendar, today is Ash Wednesday and marks the beginning of the season of Lent. For many Christians, especially Protestant Evangelicals, Lent is viewed as either an empty ritual characterized by trivial acts of self-denial, like giving up chocolate, sweets or carbonated beverages, or worse, it is a gross distortion of the Christian faith perpetuating the notion that we actually contribute something to our salvation through self-denial. Sadly, its practice often gets dismissed before we ever come to understand its ...

Connection Points: Oaths

March 03, 2014
Rev. Matt Beham
33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ 34 But I say to you, ‘Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.’” (Matthew 5:33-37) Exp ...

Building Update - Feb 26

February 28, 2014
Benjie Slaton
Rainy days are great for drought-stricken South Texas, but not so good for a building project.  The major work happening right now is pouring the piers to develop the foundation for the new Entry into the building.  Rain has slowed this process somewhat.  But, over the next two weeks, you should be able to watch the steel structure being erected as you drive by the property.  With so much work happening only on the inside until now, it will feel gratifying to watch more exterior work on the Entry and site progress. On the inside, the ...

Making Prayer a Priority

February 20, 2014
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
Preparing for Redeemer’s transition to its new downtown facility has served to remind me of what has been so foundational to our growth—Kingdom-minded prayer! Prayer is one of the bedrock commitments of a vibrant, growing church. This is clearly seen when we consider the early church who gathered regularly and often for prayer (Acts 1:14; 2:42; 6:2-4). Sustaining the priority of prayer though is hard. So often church plants start off full of dreams as big as the Kingdom of God, yet those same hopes fade as lesser objectives overwhelm a ...

Building Update - Feb 5

It feels as though we have turned a corner on the project. The upstairs is looking great. The offices and nursery are sheetrocked and have been given a first coat of primer paint. The sanctuary ceiling has sheetrock and lights and is now awaiting the final wood finishes. The more delicate features of the sanctuary such as the arch and new windows are progressing well. Much of the air conditioning has being put in place and they hope to have it functional before the weather turns toward summer...which could be tomorrow for all we know. ...

Will You Serve in the Nursery

January 29, 2014
Sarah Beaugh
When you serve in the nursery, you are being entrusted with the most vulnerable members of our church family. This great honor and responsibility is given to all of us who are willing to serve in this way. The church nursery is the first contact young families will have with Redeemer. Your friendly face and exceptional care can make a great first impression on those visiting our church. From firsthand experience, we knew Redeemer was a great fit for our family as our children had a peaceful experience in nursery and looked forward with ...

From the Garden to the City

January 20, 2014
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
From the Garden to the City! (starting Sunday, February 2nd) In preparation for moving into Redeemer’s new home downtown, our sermon series this spring will be devoted to understanding God’s purpose for the city and the Christians who live in them. It has long been noted that God began history in a Garden, but his purposes conclude in a city. The story of humanity begins with Adam and Eve carefully placed in the garden, which is watered by a beautiful river, abounding with food and is centered on two trees: the Tree of Life, which ...

Scripture Memory With No Excuses

January 16, 2014

- Fighter Verses phone app Rocks! Do you ever find yourself wishing you could memorize Scripture?  …perhaps washing out on a Scripture memory program after a couple of weeks?  This is certainly my experience personally and as mother.  No Christian who has read their Bible can deny the overwhelming blessings promised to those who store God’s Word in their heart.  God’s Word encourages, protects, and leads us through every obstacle we encounter—whether temptation from within or hard times from without.  Even though most of us would attest to ...

On Spiritual Formation - New Class

January 09, 2014
Rev. Dr. Tom Gibbs
“The way of Jesus cannot be imposed or mapped — it requires an active participation in following Jesus as he leads us through sometimes strange and unfamiliar territory, in circumstances that become clear only in the hesitations and questionings, in the pauses and reflections where we engage in prayerful conversation with one another and with him.” ― Eugene H. Peterson, The Jesus Way: A Conversation on the Ways That Jesus Is the Way This Sunday, January 12th, Redeemer begins the second installment of its new series of Spiritual Formation ...
